Your New Chip and Contactless Card

We are reissuing Calder debit cards with contactless technology. Cards are being replaced as they expire, so you will receive yours in the month your current card is set to expire. There is no charge and you do not need to do anything to request one.

Using the card

• Tap. Look for the contactless symbol at the terminal, hold the card within an inch or two of the reader, and wait for the beep or the green light. Do not hold it there after the terminal confirms.
• Insert. If the terminal does not accept a tap, insert the chip end and leave the card in the slot until the terminal tells you to remove it.
• Swipe. Some older terminals still read the stripe. This works and will continue to work.

Common questions

Can someone read my card from a distance?

Not in any practical sense. The card has to be within about two inches of a reader, and the number transmitted is a one-time code rather than the card number printed on the front, so it cannot be reused. Card sleeves are unnecessary and we do not sell them.

Do I need a PIN to tap?

Not for most purchases. Above certain amounts, which the merchant and the network set, the terminal will ask for a PIN or a signature.

What happened to my old card?

Your previous card stops working on the last day of its expiration month. Destroy it by cutting through the chip, and remember to update any recurring payment that draws on the old number.
